Creation Crate Junior is a subscription box for kids – they send you materials and instructions you need to build structures and mechanisms with high quality, pre-cut cardstock, wooden dowels, string, and other materials.
This subscription box is great if you want your kids to learn more about engineering, physics, and general mechanics! I found that that Creation Crate Junior was great for my boys who are ages 7 and 9. They did need my help with the projects.
Creation Crates sends their monthly package in a cardboard mailer. Inside this package, we received materials and instructions for 2 engineering projects.

Build-it Kit #1 – Draw Bridge
The first project we received was for a drawbridge. We simply folded the pre-cut cardstock per the instruction sheet. We used tape to attach the pieces together. You could use glue, but with kids, they're usually not patient enough to wait for the glue to dry!
I did have to cut the wooden dowels to size. Fortunately, I had a pair of scissors that cut cardboard really well, so I just “scored” the wooden dowel and snapped it to break it.
My 9-year old son worked on this project and was super excited to have a working drawbridge!
The pulley system worked really great – I wasn't really sure if it would work at first, but it did!
Here's the drawbridge fully closed. This was accomplished by just pulling on the string.
Amazingly, the drawbridge opened by just letting the string go!
This was a fun project for my son and I to work on together. I loved that he learned something about physics, and he had a drawbridge to use to play with his Matchbox Cars!
Build-it Kit #2 – Snapping Snake
For this project, my 7-year old son and I worked on this project. I didn't get many shots of the project in process, but you can see here how we assembled it. For this project, again, I had to cut the wooden dowels This time, my husband was around to use his hacksaw to cut these to size.
Here is the finished “Snapping Snake”.
My son really liked extending and shrinking this fun little snake!
In Summary: Creation Crate Junior was a fun, educational experience with my two kiddos. My boys really love construction projects (aka, Legos), and this was a nice alternative and more affordable option! The instruction cards were nicely done and easy to follow. I also liked that the draw bridge and snapping snake projects turned into objects that my boys could play with after the construction phase was done.
If you homeschool or want to enrich your child's education with hands-on projects that let them learn about engineering and physics, then Creation Crate Junior would be a good choice. I especially think the annual subscription is a pretty good deal for 2 projects. Do know that younger children, like my 7-year old, will need a lot of help. But, it was perfect for my 9-year old!
