Deadbolt Mystery Society “Carnival of Chaos” February 2019 Review
The February 2019 theme was “Carnival of Chaos”. I love the fun, decorated box! It definitely got us in the mood for a carnival mystery!
This was our first peek into the box.
The first page was a welcome letter to the Deadbolt Mystery Society. Since this was our first experience with this box, having this welcome letter was super helpful!
Here's a spread of everything that we got in the box. The printed material was very high-quality and there was printed cardstock as well. It was nice to also see a printed paper bag!
You need to read all of the materials in the box. The first sheet that we read was from the Will Street Detective Agency explaining that you will be solving a mystery of a fortune teller, Madame Ruby, who was murdered at the carnival.
We went on to read the detective notes – the detective interviewed the carnival employees who were not suspects in the crime.
Here's a close-up of some of the printed cards with clues.
And there was also a carnival booklet that featured all of the carnival performers, who were also suspects in the crime!
Here's the inside of the carnival booklet.
The puzzle sheets were colorful and fun for my kids to solve.
While I wouldn't recommend this box for kids alone, my kids did help where they could.
Here were more of the printed cards. We soon learned that we needed to match a postcard or the bag with a printed colored sheet (above).
The coded symbols were not easy to solve at all – they provided a nice challenge even for my husband and me!
The printed bag was a nice touch! Oh, and the “Shadow Brothers” own the carnival and are also a mystery in this story because no one knows who they are.
If you get stuck on the puzzle, there are hint files on the website listed on this card. There's also a Facebook group that we found to be very helpful since this was our first experience with this box.
You can buy previous boxes as a one-time purchase on the Deadbolt Mystery Society website.
The game uses a few QR codes, so we made sure we had our cell phones with us to scan these codes.
We did have to use the hint files (my kids don't have a lot of patience ), and the hint files were very helpful.
With the hint files, it was much easier matching the keys to solving and decoding each puzzle.
This was one of the clues that my 9 year old sun could solve by himself.
I really liked how Deadbolt Mystery Society included audio files to listen to via their website. The audio files were needed to solve some of the puzzles.
Here's another puzzle that included using numbers to text like you would on an old cell phone!
Once we solved the mystery and identified the murderer, we entered the answer on the website. From the website, we got a full explanation of what happened and why the killer murdered Madame Ruby.
In Summary
This box was really fantastic! I was really impressed by the level of detail and quality of the story line in this Deadbolt Mystery Society Box! It probably took us a couple of hours to play it. This box would be a great activity if you had an adult dinner party with guests who like going to escape rooms. I was especially thankful that hints were provided on the website, because I'm not sure if we would've solved the mystery without them! Of course, if you are a master escape room artist, you probably wouldn't need any hints at all. 🙂
The Deadbolt Mystery Society box would be a great activity for a party (adults and teens) and would also be a great gift for anyone who loves solving mysteries. I would highly recommend Deadbolt Mystery Society as a unique gift for that person who is tough to buy for.
