KidStir Summer Sips Smoothies Review – 2018
Kidstir sends their monthly cooking kits in a green box.
When you open the inside of the box, you always get a preview of what recipes are inside. This month's theme is Summer Sips! This is perfect because my kiddos loooove smoothies!
Items in the Kidstir subscription box are wrapped in white tissue paper, sealed with the Kidstir logo sticker.
This box included 3 recipes that can be added to our Kidstir binder. Kidstir will send you a cute recipe binder if you sign up for a 12-month subscription. We also got a y-peeler and a small ice cream scoop!
I actually just found out about a y-peeler after doing some research on how to cut butternut squash on YouTube. This y-peeler is very kid friendly because it is plastic! This y-peeler is for cutting cucumbers.
Here is a cute, kid-sized ice cream scoop. Of course my kids went wild when they heard that this month's Kidstir box was going to include ice cream as part of the recipes!
We also got these fun, colorful Party Straw decoration to punch-out. This kept my kids busy while I set up for our first recipe.
I love how Kidstir include a shopping list. When I plan my weekly menu, it's easy for me to reference this shopping list so I can include whatever recipes I need in my Shipt delivery. If you haven't heard about Shipt yet, it's a grocery delivery service that let's you order your groceries online. Your groceries will be delivered usually in the next 2-3 hours. It saves me a ton of time because I don't have to spend 2 hours at the grocery store each week.
Of the 3 recipes, my kids chose to make the S'more Shake, first (of course!). You'll see this recipe in action to follow, but we also made the Purple Power and Summer Cooler recipes which were very simple AND tasty!
Kidstir S'more Shake
The first step was to smush the graham crackers. Since we are gluten free, we had a box of Schar Gluten Free Graham Crackers on-hand. My kids took a rolling pin to crush these graham crackers in a sandwich bag.
The next step was to toast marshmallows in the toaster oven for 2-3 minutes. My daughter put the marshmallows on the baking pan.
You have to keep your eye on these little babies in the toaster oven, or they will burn! This is how they turned out. I had never thought of “roasting” marshmallows in the toaster oven!
The next step was to scoop out the ice cream with Kidstir's ice cream scoop. This scoop was a bit difficult for my kids to use, so I ended up using my own ice cream scoop.
We did manage to get one scoop of ice cream into the blender with the kid-sized scoop.
The recipe also called for milk. My kids really love measuring and pouring liquids.
Then we added the toasted marshmallows.
Then we gave the blender a spin!
While the blender was going, my kids tooked the crushed graham crackers and put them on a plate.
And then they took their glass cups and diped them in milk.
The milk acted as an adhesive so the graham cracker could stick to the rim of the glass.
This graham cracker rim turned out pretty nicely!
We added the S'more Shake to the rimmed glass.
Then topped the shakes off with toasted marshmallow.
The kids loved adding their Summer Sips straws (decoration and all!) to their glasses. This shake was quite a treat and my kids gulped it down and asked for more!
The S'mores Shakes recipe card also had a recipe for actual s'mores you can make in your toaster oven. We didn't have mini chocolate chips, but had mini M&M's on hand.
Once they were toasted, we had indoor S'mores to go with our S'more Shakes!
This was the final product – and it was delicious!
At first glance, Kidstir seems a bit pricey for the actual materials you get in the box. BUT, the experience that I had with my kids in the kitchen was invaluable. Not only did we get some recipes that we really loved, but my kids did learn some kitchen skills at the same time.
Kidstir would be great for weekend bonding time with your kids, or for long summer days where summer boredom sets in. Their kid-friendly recipes and tools are really hard to find elsewhere.
