Karv Meals Subscription Box Review – October 2018

Karv Meals sent us their $179 2-person meat subscription box to review. Their box was pretty heavy when I picked it up off my front porch!

I was super excited to tear open this box to see all of the lovely cuts of meat that I've seen on Karv Meal's website!

Just so you know, the temperature in Michigan when I got this box was in the 50 degrees. Given there is raw meat in this box, I was happy to see that there were ice crystals still on the inside of the box.

Karv packs dry ice on top of the inner box with meat inside. The also package their meat with a biodegradable and back yard compostable foam.

The sustainability factor in packing this box is really a nice added touch!

After removing the dry ice, here is the inner box full of grass-fed meat!

This is everything we got in this Karv meat box! In this box, we got:

  • NY Strip Steak
  • Bavette Steak
  • Beef Tips
  • Ground Beef
  • Chicken Cutlets
  • Diced Chicken
  • Ground Turkey
  • Pork Roast
  • Pork Tenderloin
  • Mesquite Seasoning

It is quite an assortment of beef, chicken, and pork.

Karv Meals gives you quick instructions on how to unpack your box. The biggest takeaway from this info card was to let your dry ice evaporate on its own – you can't leave it in the sink or put it in the garbage. We left ours outside on our back patio.

You also get a “Gourmands' Guide”. The word “gourmand” (I had to look this up!) means either a connoisseur of good food or a person who enjoys eating and often eats too much.

Inside this guide were 5 recipes from Karv to make meal planning easier. The recipes in this book included:

  • Strip Steaks with Gorgonzola Butter & Crispy Onions
  • Hearty Multi-Cooker Beef Stew
  • Boneless Center-Cut Roast with Pineapple Marinade
  • Chicken Chow Mein
  • Turkey Shepard's Pie
  • Fennel & Apple Salad (Side Dish)

Karv NY Strip Steak – 1.26 lbs

Karv's grass-finished premium beef has 2-3x more Omega 3s than conventional beef, which helps to fight against the risk of heart disease and build a healthier “you.”

This NY Strip Steak is born, raised, and harvested in the US. Each steak was a nice 10 oz size, so I could use just one or both packages.

Here's what this NY strip steak looked like after a quick visit to our outdoor grill and back! The steak was really quite delicious!

Karv Bavette Steaks – 0.83 lbs

Both of these steaks are .4 lbs each – which again is the perfect portion once this meat has been grilled or cooked! Bavette steak is a good cut of meat if you're making fajitas.

We decided to grill our Bavette Steaks the same night. This steak is a bit thicker, but also a bit more tender than the NY strip steak.

Karv Ground Turkey – 2 lbs.

We got 2 lbs of Karv's ground turkey. I'm really glad that Karv's meat comes from pasture-raised, free range raised animals.

We made the Turkey Shepard's Pie from the recipe book that came in this box. This shepard's pie has mashed sweet potato on top of mushrooms and ground turkey. It was delicious and 2 out of my 3 kids gobbled it up. One of my kids is always picky, of course!

Karv Meals Premium Beef Tips – 0.90 lbs

The beef tips came in 0.45 individual packages, which would be great if you are only cooking for yourself! We ended up using both packages for our family.

With these beef tips, we made Karv's Heart Multi-Cooker Beef Stew. This was really healthy, delicious, and quick with our [easyazon_link identifier=”B00FLYWNYQ” locale=”US” tag=”myb096-20″]Instant Pot Pressure Cooker[/easyazon_link]! I typically put potatoes in my beef stew, but this recipe had zucchini, tomatoes, celery, carrots, and parsnips instead. It was a nice, different take on traditional beef stew.

Karv Meals Ground Beef (85% Lean / 15% Fat) – 2 lbs

Karv's meats are antibiotic and hormone free. I always buy grass-fed and organic ground beef from the grocery store, and was so glad to have this regular staple delivered to my door!

It's so important to buy high quality meat because of all of the health benefits based on research: improved insulin metabolism, lower blood pressure and reduced risk of stroke. They have also been able to lower “bad” LDL Cholesterol and triglycerides while increasing good cholesterol – which a definite plus!

With this ground beef, we made nachos for lunch using the ground beef, 1 onion, and half of a taco seasoning packet. This was a quick and easy lunch – and yummy to boot!

Karv Diced Chicken – ~2 lbs.

Having diced chicken makes meal prep so much easier! Karv's chicken is organic and free range, which is so important to me and my family!

With this diced chicken, we made a Chicken Burrito Skillet recipe from Ready Set Eat. You can see the diced chicken in this dish, and it was very moist and tender!

Karv Pork Tenderloin – 0.80 lbs

Karv's Pork Tenderloin is packaged in 0.4 lb packages, which is great again for individual servings. Karv's meats are flash-frozen, so you just throw them in the freezer when you get them.

We made Karv's Pork Tenderloin with Cowboy Butter recipe. This pork tenderloin was really moist and delicious – and so healthy for you too! I did end up adding some additional pork tenderloin to this recipe only because 1 lb isn't enough for my family.

Here some additional cuts of meat that we got – but didn't get a chance to cook yet:

Karv Boneless Center Cut Pork Roast – 1.18 lbs

Karv Chicken Cutlets – Organic and Free Range – 1.6 lbs

Karv Organic Mesquite Seasoning

In Summary: We were pretty impressed with the taste, quality, and convenience of the Karv Meals $179 meat subscription box. The $179 box is meant to be enough meat for 2 people for a month (25-28 servings).

We got a variety of beef, pork, and chicken and can use this meat to make 8 meals (when we finish using up the meat) for a family of five (2 adults and 3 kids)! For $179, that's $22 for the meat in the meal which is a great deal for such high-quality meat.

I really liked that the small, pre-packaged meat portions, which helped speed thawing time in the fridge. Also, the health benefits of getting pasture-raised meat from U.S. farms gives me some peace of mind that my family is getting the best nutrients they can from Karv Meals!
