Bitsbox Review

Bitsbox ships in a cute, robot themed box!

The RoboBoogie box is the second box that you get from Bitsbox. You can see the first box that we got in our review here. The first Bitsbox comes with a binder and some extra items.

Each box in the Bitsbox series covers a new coding concept. The first box covered “coordiantes” and this box covers “variables”.

Here's our first peek at what's inside the second box!

Now, let's take a closer look at each of these 4 items.

BitsBox Coding Cards – RoboBoogie

Each of the coding cards will help you child learn the coding concept for the month (in this case, “variables”). It starts with simple code and builds up to more advanced code.

You can see some of the code here. Some of the cards include code to build an “app” or a “mini-app” that your child can interact with.

The coding cards also have a sticker chart so your child keep track of the apps they have completed.

Here is the corresponding sticker sheet.

Binder Dividers

When you get your first BitsBox, you'll get a binder. The second box includes these binder cards so your child can keep all of their coding cards organized! Such a great idea!

The back of each binder divider has the “Stamps” that are used in each box. The stamps are really just pictures that are used in the coding apps. You can see box 1 had animal stamps, and box 2 has robot stamps.

Bitsbox Grownup Guide

The Grownup Guide is meant to tell you what your kids are learning this month.

This handbook comes in handy, especially when my son needs help with some code!

The back of grownup guide gives you some hints to deal with coding “bugs”. I know from experience that my 9-year old son ran into so coding issues with the first box, but once he overcame them (either on his own, or with a little help from me), he got quite the confidence boost !

BitsBox Coding App Examples

Once my son started coding with these slides, here's a look at a couple of the apps that he built with the code.

This “Mars Needs Milk” app is showing him tapping the screen to make cows appear to get sucked up into this UFO spaceship. He really like this app! You can see all of the code that he wrote below (using the coding card to help!).

Another coding card had him code a “Castle Defender” Game where he created a game to shoot rocks at the evil robot. After he created the basic code, he improved it by being able to shoot the rock more than once after hitting the green play button.

Final Thoughts

My 9-year old son loves getting Bitsbox in the mail! This second box introduced him to the concept of using variables in code, and he also got to use robot and space themed graphics! A win for me as a parent and a win for me son too! My son loves to create the base app with the code that Bitsbox sends on the coding cards, and then he'll spend a lot of time improving the app with his own code, too! Bitsbox is an investment in my son's coding future (just the beginning, I hope!) and is a fun, educational tool.

Bitsbox would make a great holiday gift to introduce a child to the world of coding!
