We are reviewing the Chapter Book Box which is meant for kids ages 7-10.
Bookroo ships their books in a blue box with their adorable Kangaroo logo.
Bookroo comes with a parent guide to give you a quick summary of what your child will be reading about the month.
The back of the parent guide has more details on the characters in the book so you can ask your child about them! Bookroo also has an online quiz to help test comprehension. My kids love trivia so we will definitely be trying this out!
Now, let's take a closer look to see each of the books that we got in the November box!
Each book came carefully wrapped in holiday gift wrap. I love how Bookroo sends their books in gift wrap – it is like giving your child gifts to unwrap each month!
Inside this first gift, was a Horton Halfpott: Or, The Fiendish Mystery of Smugwick Manor; or, The Loosening of M'Lady Luggertuck's Corset Paperback Book by Tom Angleberger. This book has a 4.5 star rating on Amazon with 34 reviews!
This book seems to have a pretty silly storyline with Horton Halfpott, the good-natured but lowly kitchen boy who can't tell a lie. The print in this book is spaced well for my 9-year old reader!
Here is some praise that this book has received from various review sites:
[su_quote cite=Kirkus Reviews]“A positively gleeful historical mystery farce. Short chapters, a fast pace and plenty of linguistic and slapstistic humor will have young readers hoping that a sequel is planned. The scribbly pen-and-ink chapter-heading cartoon illustrations are just icing on the cake—or pickle éclair. A romp from start to finish.” [/su_quote]
[su_quote cite=The Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books]“Exaggerated black-and-white drawings emphasize the often wacky humor in this goofy faux-British mystery. Sprawling, outlandish tale.”[/su_quote]
[su_quote cite=Publishers Weekly]“Readers will enjoy Angleberger’s penchant for the absurd as well as his many droll asides. With Angleberger’s many eclectic characters, his wild-and-witty storytelling, and a lighthearted but perplexing mystery—involving a “lump” of diamonds, a couple of wigs, and a bust of Napoleon—readers are in for a treat.”[/su_quote]
The second gift had a Dory Fantasmaglory Hardcover Book by Abby Hanlon. This book has a 4.5 star rating on Amazon with 418 reviews!
This book 1 in a series of 5 books. It has larger print and some illustrations too, which are great for my kids!
This book is about Dory who is the youngest in her family and uses her wild imagination and untiring energy to get into lots of mischief!
Here is some praise that this book has received from various review sites:
[su_quote cite=”Kirkus Reviews“]This inventive child is irresistible…Charming, funny and true to life.[/su_quote]
[su_quote cite=”SLJ Fuse 8 Blog”]Perfection of tone, plot, pacing, art, you name it. Author Abby Hanlon has taken a universal childhood desire (the wish of the younger sibling for the older ones to play with them) and turned it into a magnificent epic fantasy complete with sharp-toothed robbers, bearded fairy godmothers, and what may be the most realistic 6-year-old you’ll ever meet on a page. In a word, fantastico.[/su_quote]
In Summary
The November 2020 Bookroo Chapter Book Box had 2 great books that both had 4.5 star reviews on Amazon. I love how Bookroo chooses books that I typically wouldn't choose – it makes book shopping a lot easier for me! I am even more reliant on buying books online for my kids nowadays since access to their school and local libraries is tough with the pandemic. I like how Bookroo included the first book in a series (Dory Fantasmaglory) – that way if my kids like it, we can buy the other books in the series too!
