Universal Yums December 2020 Review
Universal Yums shipped their December snacks in a red box. We are reviewing the Yum Yum Box which includes 12+ snacks and is $25/month.
The theme of the November box is “Seasons Greetings from Everywhere!”. We are getting holiday snacks from all over the world! This is the cover of the guidebook.
The inside of the info booklet has a lot of great detail on the snack itself, what region or town the snack originated in, and ingredient/nutrition info! I love the ingredient info because we have both a peanut and gluten allergy in my household.
This month’s snacks come from all over the world!
A “Yum Scoreboard” was included – which is great if you want to taste these snacks with your family and friends. We used the happy, neutral, and sad faces to rate our snacks. You also get a peek at snacks included from the 2020 monthly boxes. I'm bummed I missed out on Russia's Ripe Pear Milk Chocolate!
We also got a fun sticker that says “I safely traveled around the world this year”! Isn't that the truth. I love how Universal Yums lets you experience other countries without having to leave your house. Especially during the pandemic!
Now, let’s get a closer look at all of these great holiday snacks from around the world!
Sugar & Anise Polvoron – Spain's Favorite Christmas Cookie
I never thought you could use star anise in a cookie, but apparently, Spain does! This polvoron cookie, which is name after “dust”, due to its extra-crumbly ration of flour, sugar, and lard. I thought the combo of sweetness and anise together in this cookie was interesting, and I wouldn't mind eating one again!
Roast Turkey & Stuffing Potato Crisps – A UK Holiday Feast in Every Chip
For the British, nearly 90% of locals have a roasted turkey at the center of their Christmas feasts. Turkey was introduced to the UK from the Americas in the 16th century. I can't believe how similar the taste of these chips are to turkey, stuffing, with a touch of gravy too! I can see if you are still missing the taste of your Thanksgiving feast, this is a convenient way to taste it all over again!
Salted Egg Yolk Popcorm – Taiwan's Most Egg-cellent Holiday Tradition
In Taiwan, the Fall Moon Festival is known for yolk-filled mooncake pastries. This popcorn smelled like typical popcorn, but had the egg yolk flavor mixed in. Probably not my favorite, but if you love egg yolk, you might like these chips.
Mocktail Bonbons – Celebrate New Year's Eve with the UK's Juiciest Pub Faves
These mocktail candies were the favorite treat in this box! The British love to celebrate the New Year at a local pub (maybe not this year), and these help you experience some of those cocktail flavor – sans alcohol! They look like hard candies, but are actually chewy and sweet!
Kruidnoten Cookies – The Netherlands #1 Spice Cookie, Bite-sized!
These cookies from the Netherlands taste like the gingerbread cookies I just made last week! The Dutch loved their spiced cookies, and these come in a fantastic bite-sized version!
Alpine Nut Cake – Crumbly, Nutty Pie Straight from the Swiss Alps
There are sweet, caramelized walnuts and hazelnuts in this nut cake (or what I would call a cookie). The city of Bern in Switzerland celebrates the city's founding every January by eating nuts, so this cookie is perfect that occasion!
Cocoa Dusted Chocolate Truffles – France's Most Popular (and Decadent!) Christmas Gift
The French invented their French truffle by combining chocolate an cream using a silky ganache. This has a bittersweet outside, but is a lovely chocolate smooth ganache on the inside. It was really amazing and I will be buying more of these soon!
Chocolate Cream Pandoro – Italy's Beloved Holiday Sweet Bread, Plus Gooey Chocolate
This Italian sweet holiday bread was invented in Verona Italy, and is enjoyed countrywide on Christmas and New Year's. It's a golden sweet bread with gooey chocolate at it's center!
Apple & Dark Chocolate Dominosteins – Four Layers of Festive German Deliciousness
The Germans invented the dominostein that includes a layer of gingerbread, apple tart jelly, Persian which is made of ground apricot kernels, and a coating of dark chocolate. This treat reminded me a bit of eating fruit cake here in the US, with the addition of being enrobed in delicious chocolate!
Assorted Baklava – Jordan's Sweetest, Flakiest Way to Break Ramadan Fast
This Baklava is used to end fasting at Ramadan in the country of Jordan. Baklava has a flaky crust with sweet pistachios in the middle. I do have to say this pastry was very fresh and amazingly sweet. It may be the best Baklava that I have had yet!
Roasted Garlic Potato Chips – An Addictively Crunchy Take on a Czech Holiday Tradition
I am a fan of garlic sauce, but didn't think I would see it in a potato chip! The Czechs put garlic chips under their holiday table. Placing garlic under the holiday table is said to bring strength and protection to everyone at the party. The taste was interesting, but is probably more for that garlic lover.
Sea Salt & Caramel Fudge – A Sweet & Savory Take on English Christmas Fudge
Fudge is a Christmas staple in England – and there are plenty of flavors to choose from. This salted caramel fudge is rich and creamy, with just the right amount of butter and caramel! Yum!
Wrap Up
Most of the snacks in this Universal Yums Holiday Edition were amazing, but some were more for the local country's tastes! One of my kids has a peanut allergy, so it's really great how the booklet included a list of ingredients with the most common allergens highlighted in bold. I especially loved sampling all of these sweets and snacks from around the world! My favorites were the French Cocoa Dusted Truffles, British Mocktail Bonbons, and Baklava!
Universal Yums is a great family activity for me and my kids. It's always a surprise to see how my kids will react to tasting flavors they haven't before.
