Bookroo September 2020 Chapter Book Box Review
Bookroo ships their books in a cute teal box with an adorable kangaroo.
Once we started opening the box, this is what we saw.
The info card tells you a bit about what the included books are about. This month, the main characters are Shylo, who is a small and shy rabbit who has to prove his courage, determination and dependability. The other main character is Van, who has a special gift that allows him to nice little treasures around him.
On the back of the info card, there is a Parent Guide, with some spoilers! Bookroo readers can also test their knowledge of these books by filling out a quiz on Bookroo's website. I love this idea because I'm not sure how much my kids are actually comprehending while they're reading.
The books themselves came beautifully wrapped in high-quality wrapping paper. Bookroo would give your child of choice 2-3 presents to open every month!
My 8-year old son was all over unwrapping these presents, as you can see. I only managed to snap a few photos of him actually opening these gifts because he ripped into them so fast!
The Royal Rabbits of London by Santa Montefiore and Simon Sebag Montefiore – Retail Value $7.99 on Amazon
The first paperback book he received was “The Royal Rabbits of London”. This book has 90+ 4.5 star reviews on Amazon:
Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH meets Warriors in this “humorous, fast-paced adventure” (Kirkus Reviews) that proves that even the smallest rabbit can be the biggest hero from publishing power couple Santa and Simon Sebag Montefiore.
Life is an adventure. Anything in the world is possible—by will and by luck, with a moist carrot, a wet nose, and a slice of mad courage!
Shylo has always been the runt of the litter, the weakest and quietest of all of his family. His siblings spend their days making fun of him for not being like the rest of them. But when Shylo stumbles across a band of ratzis and overhears their evil plan to take a photo of the Queen in her nightie, it’s up to this unlikely hero to travel to London and inform the Royal Rabbits of London about the diabolical plot! The Royal Rabbits of London have a proud history of protecting the royal family and now the secret society need to leap into action to stop the ratzis…
But can a rabbit as feeble and shy as Shylo convince them that Queen is in danger?
Then, my son opened the second book, which was wrapped in plaid yellow paper.
The Collectors by Jacqueline West – Hardcover Retail Value $16.99
The second book he received was a hardcover of “The Collectors” by Jacqueline West. This book has 35 five star reviews on Amazon:
2019 Schneider Family Book Award Honor Book
“Original, brave, and addictive.”—Adam Gidwitz, bestselling author of the Newbery Honor Book The Inquisitor’s Tale
Fast-paced, witty, and riveting, this contemporary fantasy adventure has magic woven through every page. The Collectors begins an enchanting two-book series from Jacqueline West, the New York Times–bestselling author of The Books of Elsewhere series. For fans of Serafina and the Black Cloak, The Isle of the Lost, and The Secret Keepers. This middle grade novel is an excellent choice for tween readers in grades 5 to 6, especially during homeschooling. It’s a fun way to keep your child entertained and engaged while not in the classroom.
Van has always been an outsider. He’s hard of hearing, collects trinkets, and lives with his single mother—an opera singer with a huge personality. Then one day, Van notices a girl stealing pennies from a fountain, and everything changes. He follows the girl, Pebble, and uncovers an underground society full of wishes and the people who collect them. Not all wishes are good and even good wishes often have unintended consequences, and the Collectors have made it their duty to protect us. But they aren't the only ones who have their eyes on the world’s wishes—and they may not be the good guys, after all.
Jacqueline West spins a story about friendship, magic, and the gray area between good and evil. The Collectors is for fans of Cassie Beasley’s Circus Mirandus and Jonathan Auxier’s The Night Gardener. Booklist calls it, “A brilliant fantasy adventure exploring the consequences of getting what you wish for.”
Both of these chapter books are great for my kids ages 8, 10, and 12!
